Animal reiki is a quiet practice where a trained practitioner sits with your pet and offers calm, focused presence. There’s no diagnosing, no pills, and no pressure. Your pet decides how close to come, and walking away is a perfectly good answer.
We work with Nassau County pet parents at a specific moment: a dog who shakes through every thunderstorm, a senior cat who’s slowing down, a pup just home from surgery. We offer reiki for dogs and cats as comfort support that sits next to veterinary care, never in place of it.
Reiki doesn’t replace the care your vet gives. It adds a quiet layer of comfort around it.
Let’s be straight about the evidence. Veterinary critics point out that studies of reiki in animals are limited and often poorly designed, and nobody has shown it treats disease. We don’t sell it that way. Even skeptics concede that dogs and cats can find gentle human contact comforting, and comfort is what we’re here for.
It also helps to know that NYCAVMA, the New York Complementary & Alternative Veterinary Medical Association, lists reiki among the modalities its member veterinarians practice. Your vet handles diagnosis and treatment. We work around that, and if something looks wrong, we’d rather you call them first.
Message 516-586-4364 with your pet’s age, temperament, and any vet care underway so we can plan sensibly.
Your pet decides how close to come. We stay quiet, keep things low-key, and never force contact.
We tell you what we noticed, answer questions, and flag anything that deserves a call to your vet.
Dawn Ristau, LAC, a Licensed Acupuncturist and Certified Reiki Master with over a decade of experience, guides every session. Clients describe her as unhurried and as someone who explains everything before it happens. That matters when the animal in the room is nervous and the person holding the leash is too.
Most of the pets we see across Nassau County are dogs and cats: the storm-shaker, the senior who’s slowing down, the one recovering from surgery. Horses and other large animals bring logistics of their own, and we’ll tell you plainly what’s realistic before you commit to anything.

Animal reiki is a calm, hands-light practice where the practitioner offers quiet, focused presence while your dog stays in charge of the interaction. A session usually starts with a short conversation about your dog's age, temperament, and any vet care in progress. Then we give your dog room to approach, sniff, settle, or wander off. Some dogs lie down within minutes, and others take their time. Nobody gets restrained or corrected. You're welcome to ask questions as we go, and we'll explain what we're noticing before you head home.
No, and anyone who tells you otherwise should make you cautious. Reiki is comfort support. It doesn't diagnose, prescribe, or treat disease. Whether your vet is in Massapequa, Farmingdale, Hicksville, or anywhere else across Nassau County, NY, keep them in the loop and follow their plan. If your pet is limping, not eating, or suddenly acting differently, call the vet first. We'll tell you the same thing. Reiki fits best as a quiet addition for pets who are anxious, aging, or recovering.
Plenty of cats walk away, and that's fine. Animal reiki works with the cat's choices instead of against them. We keep things quiet, let your cat decide the distance, and don't chase or pick them up. Some cats settle nearby within minutes. Others watch from across the room, and that can still be a calm, useful session. Reiki for cats won't suit a pet who wants nothing to do with it, and we won't push. If your cat hates new places, tell us when you text and we'll plan around it.
Honestly, the research is thin. Studies on reiki in animals are limited, and veterinary critics say no one has shown it treats physical disease. We don't claim it does. What you can reasonably expect is a calm, quiet session and, for many pets, a visible settling during it. It isn't a guarantee, and results vary from pet to pet. If a practitioner promises a cure or tells you to skip your vet, walk away. We'd rather you decide with the facts in front of you.
Reiki for horses is practiced by some animal reiki practitioners, but horses are a different conversation from a dog on a living room rug. Size, barn setting, and travel all change what's practical, and trailering a horse across Nassau County and Long Island is a hurdle of its own. Rather than overpromise, we'd ask you to text 516-586-4364, tell us about your horse and where they're kept, and let us say plainly whether we're the right fit. If we're not, we'll tell you.
Booking starts with a text to 516-586-4364. We prefer texts, and we'll sort out timing and answer your first questions there. Mention your pet's age, any health conditions, and anything that stresses them, like car rides or new rooms. If your pet gets anxious in the car, say so up front, whether you're coming off the Southern State Parkway or down Sunrise Highway. It also helps to have your vet's name and a list of any medications handy. We'll go over session length and cost when you text.
